Imprint of gravitational waves on the cosmic microwave background.

چکیده
Long-wavelength gravitational waves can induce significant temperature anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background. Distinguishing this from anisotropy induced by energy density fluctuations is critical for testing inflationary cosmology and theories of large-scale structure formation. We describe full radiative transport calculations of the two contributions and show that they differ dramatically at angular scales below a few degrees. We show how anisotropy experiments probing largeand small-angular scales can combine to distinguish the imprint due to gravitational waves. PACS NOs: 98.80.Cq, 98.80.Es, 98.70.Vc Typeset using REVTEX

The Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background
We summarize the physical mechanism by which the cosmic microwave background acquires a small degree of polarization. We discuss the imprint left by gravitational waves and the use of polarization as a test of the inflationary paradigm. We discuss some physical processes that affect the cosmic microwave background polarization after recombination, such as gravitational lensing and the reionizat...
متن کاملThe cosmic microwave background: a theorist’s perspective
We review the role of the temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in constraining the cosmological model. We put particular emphasis on the major milestones that have been passed, and CMB constraints on early-universe physics. We also look ahead, surveying what we hope to learn from the next generation of instruments targeting the small-scale...
متن کاملChiral Imprint of a Cosmic Gauge Field on Primordial Gravitational Waves
A cosmological gauge field with isotropic stress-energy introduces parity violation into the behavior of gravitational waves. We show that a primordial spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves develops a preferred handedness, leftor right-circularly polarized, depending on the abundance and coupling of the gauge field during the radiation era. A modest abundance of the gauge field would ind...
متن کاملCMB anisotropies caused by gravitational waves: A parameter study
Anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation due to gravity waves are investigated. An initial spectrum of gravity waves may have been induced during an epoch of inflation. We study the propagation of such a spectrum in different Friedmann backgrounds with hot and cold dark matter, radiation and, possibly, a cosmological constant. We calculate its imprint as anisotropies on the cos...
متن کاملGravity, Relic Coherent Gravitons and Optical Chaos
We discuss the production of massive relic coherent gravitons in a particular class of f(R) gravity, which arises from string theory, and their possible imprint in the Cosmic Microwave Background. In fact, in the very early Universe, these relic gravitons could have acted as slow gravity waves. They may have then acted to focus the geodesics of radiation and matter. Therefore, their imprint on ...
